Zero-click searches — when someone gets their answer directly on the search results page without clicking through to a website — now account for 68% of U.S. Google searches, according to a June 2026 clickstream study from SparkToro and Similarweb covering January through April 2026.
AI Overviews — Google’s AI-generated summaries at the top of search results — are a major driver of that shift. On informational searches where an AI Overview appears, organic click-through rate fell 61% between mid-2024 and September 2025, according to Seer Interactive’s study of 3,119 queries across 42 organizations. Voice search results are part of the same pattern — almost by definition zero-click, since nobody’s clicking a link when a smart speaker reads an answer out loud.
If your traffic reports have looked flatter than your rankings would suggest lately, this is probably why.
ChatGPT’s move into ads is part of the same broader pattern — AI platforms increasingly answering questions directly rather than sending people out to click. Here’s what that shift actually looks like right now if you’re trying to make sense of where AI monetization is headed.
Why This Matters for Your Business
For most small and medium-sized businesses, this shift means traditional organic traffic metrics no longer tell the full story. Zero-click searches reduce direct website visits, but they increase the importance of being the source AI systems actually cite — even when that citation doesn’t produce a click.
This isn’t purely a traffic story, either. Being cited inside an AI Overview still counts for something: in the same Seer study, brands cited inside an AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks than brands that weren’t, though Seer notes it can’t prove the citation itself causes the lift. That’s a citation-based kind of visibility. There’s a newer, narrower kind worth knowing about too: Google’s Preferred Sources feature doesn’t touch rankings, but it does let individual searchers see more of you specifically, once they’ve chosen to.
How to Build Authority Beyond the Click
Passive SEO — writing content and waiting for rankings to bring traffic — is losing ground faster than active, authority-building SEO. Over 20+ years of watching search behavior shift, the businesses that adapt fastest to a change like this are the ones that treat themselves as an active brand across channels, not just a set of ranking pages.
A few things that move the needle:
- Audit your highest-traffic pages for E-E-A-T — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. Back claims with data, cite real sources, and make sure author bios are visible and specific. Google’s own AI Overview documentation points to these signals directly.
- Be active off-site, not just on-site. Regular social posts, consistent brand mentions, and a real presence across channels all feed the signals AI systems use to decide who to cite. This is part of why AI-driven search is sometimes described as “conversational” — it rewards brands that show up consistently, not just brands with one well-optimized page.
- Collect and nurture your own audience. On-site forms, email capture, and a CRM you actually use (HubSpot, in my case) matter more in a zero-click world, not less — you’re building a channel Google doesn’t control.
Optimizing for AI Overviews: A Practical Checklist
To increase your odds of being cited rather than skipped:
- Write clear, directly-answering content — lead with the answer, then explain
- Use structured data / schema markup for your main entities and FAQs (see Google’s structured data guidelines for current implementation specs)
- Build consistent brand mentions and accurate business info across the web
- Publish original, high-quality content that demonstrates real expertise — not just content that repeats what’s already ranking
- Monitor Google Search Console for impression data tied to AI-driven features, not just traditional organic clicks. Impressions and clicks tell you different things here, too — worth knowing the difference between the two before you read too much into either number alone.
- Make sure your site is healthy and fast
Tracking This in GA4 and Search Console
Because zero-click searches don’t produce a site visit, standard traffic dashboards will undercount your actual visibility. Set this up instead:
- In GA4, go to Reports > Acquisition > Search Console
- Use the Google Organic Search Queries report for query-level impression and CTR data pulled from AI-driven features, not just clicks
- Switch to Google Organic Search Traffic to see landing page views tied to those impressions
Layer in video content where relevant (YouTube feeds AI systems too) and make sure schema is implemented site-wide, not just on a handful of pages.
TLDR
AI Overviews and zero-click search aren’t killing organic search — they’re changing what “winning” a search result looks like. The businesses that adapt are the ones that stop measuring success purely by clicks and start measuring whether they’re the source AI systems trust enough to cite. Start with one high-traffic page: audit it for E-E-A-T, make sure it directly answers the question it’s trying to rank for, and track impressions alongside clicks going forward.
